Located up a winding spiral staircase, the medieval library at Gloucester Cathedral contains a wonderful collection of books and manuscripts dating back to the 11th century. 

Join us on one of the dates below for a rare opportunity to take a peek inside and see a selection of items. On each date, you are invited to hear about the history of our Library and explore different items in the collection following a theme.

Dates & Themes


18 August - Geography Theme
From street maps, and travelogues to pencil sketches, take a trip to the library as part of your Summer holidays to explore how both our local area and the wider world have been represented in our historic books.

September and October - Medieval Theme
Visit our 15th century library and see a selection of our treasurers from the medieval period. From humble histories to illuminated charters step back to our earliest recorded history.

· Library Tours last around 60 minutes
· Library Tours involve climbing 38 spiral steps. 

Booking essential. Bookings will close 24 hours before the date of the event. Any remaining tickets will be available to purchase at the Welcome Desk on the day, subject to availability. 

Booking Amendments and Cancellations Policy 

We appreciate plans and circumstances can change. To update the date or time of your visit, please click the ‘View / Edit Booking’ link in your confirmation email to modify your booking.

Any changes must be made a minimum of 24 hours prior to the time of your booking. If you are no longer able to attend, please email visits@gloucestercathedral.org.uk to request cancellation.

Please note, cancellation requests must be received a minimum of 48 hours prior to the time of your booking to be eligible for a refund.
