As part of Gloucester Cathedral's exciting programme of events alongside its exhibition of Luke Jerram's Mars: War and Peace is a new Religion and Science Sixth Form Conference on Tuesday 22 October 2024 exploring, the interactions of religion, philosophy and faith with science and the modern world.
Running all day (10am-2:45pm), this conference is an excellent opportunity for students to explore both a-level content and higher level academic debates, with experts on hand and the Cathedral open for them to explore.
The day will include talks and panel discussions including keynote speaker Professor Andrew Davison. Currently Starbridge Professor of Theology and Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, Professor Davison is about to take up a new role as Canon and Regius Professor of Divinity at Christ Church College, Oxford. From the recent announcement of this new role:
‘With his unusual background as both a trained scientist and a theologian, Andrew's work brings together science, theology and philosophy. One of his interests is in the possibility of extraterrestrial life and the human response to such a discovery. For nine months in 2016-17, he was at the Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton, New Jersey as a member of a team thinking about the implications of life elsewhere in the cosmos, on a project partly funded by NASA, and he has spent the last two years at the Center as a Visiting Fellow. He is on the Steering Committee of the Leverhulme Centre for Life in the Universe, where he represents the Arts & Humanities. His book on religious responses to the prospect of life elsewhere in the universe Astrobiology and Christian Doctrine: Exploring the implications of life in the universe was published last year; the Church Times described it as a "magnificently fair, informative, trustworthy, and mind-expanding work of theology, surely a modern classic in the field".’
