Lydbrook Band was formed in 1923 by a group of coal miners in the village and therefore celebrate their centenary this year.  Records show that there were brass bands in Lydbrook as far back as 1850, and the strong brass banding tradition in the Forest of Dean continues to this day.

 

The band has been busy celebrating its centenary all year, including a tour to Belgium, performing at Tyne Cote Cemetery and taking part in the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate. This concert in Gloucester Cathedral will be another wonderful occasion to mark the band’s centenary.

 

Our guests for the evening will be the 60-strong Pontarddulais Male Voice Choir, who will bring their own unique Welsh voices to the concert.

 

The programme will consist of well-known and entertaining music, as well as featuring a performance of ‘A Forest Symphony’, composed for the band in 2007 by past member Gavin Higgins.  Gavin’s music has been critically acclaimed over the years and has been performed at the BBC Promenade concerts in the Royal Albert Hall and at this year’s Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester.
